While I was senior graphic design student at East Carolina University my classmate, Joshua Vaughan (find him at Blue Barn Design Co.), and I earned the responsibility of designing and identifying the Quality Enhancement Plan of East Carolina University from the years 2013-2018. The program Write Where You Belong was created for the English Department at ECU to teach and empower students to become better writers from their first day of classes. Our task involved creating an identity for this program without making it a separate brand or a logo, but a typographic solution with illustrative elements. Once this identity was created we applied it to different kinds of collateral, including ballpoint pens, small notebooks, flash drives, apparel, tote and drawstring bags, posters, and much more.
While our lighthouse graphic was not approved by the University, the stripes and type treatment passed through the final stages of approval. As of the fall semester 2012 these designs were used on notebooks, ballpoint pens, and tee-shirts. These were distributed to faculty and first year students, and acted as visual branding while the program was in place. ECU is now in a new QEP program for 2023-2028 and still appears to be using our work!
