Pottery, Glazing Free Study 2018

After completing the short four week class on glazing basics in February of 2018, me and about seven of my classmates expressed interest in continuing to mix and learn about glazes. With encouragement from the head of ceramics, we now all meet once a month and then take time on our own to continue trying recipes at the studio. Since then I have been able to start focusing on recipes that I have been interested in a while, particularly crawl glazes or glazes with lots of color movement. Here I will be sharing what I mix and learn over time.

Marilee's Lave Glaze, base from the February class now with colorants titanium, tin oxide, and copper carbonate added. Should have been some kind of red but came out black.

Zygote's cone 6 crawl glaze base. Beads up into smooth pure white texture. A second example has been sprayed onto a house blue celadon and is on the rack to be fired.

Natalie's Cone 6 glaze base, pearlescent and milky in color with hints of a blue cast. There was an error in mixing, a second attempt is on the rack to be fired.

Second attempt of Natalie's Cone 6 glaze base, less pearlescent and milky in color but still with hints of a blue cast. Beautiful glassy bubbles in the thicker parts.

A variant recipe of Some Bright Green, warm toned base and buttery soft surface.

Fifth or Sixth dip attempt at Zygote's crawl glaze. Finally figured out the consistency needed, will try on dark colors soon. Burned off of earlier attempts.

Third mix of Natalie's Cone 6 glaze base, with added rutile. Still glassy bubbles where thick, a warm grey with peachy breaks on the edges.

Laura's Base, an old Cone 10 that was on some of my first pots 15 years ago. A little dry, will try altering the Kaolin to Whiting ratio for a more satin finish.

Smokey Mountain Mist base, an old cone 6 from over 5 years ago. Stopped mixing it due to bad color change, base is close to the studio house clear glaze. Milky where thick, translucent.

Smokey Mountain Mist with recorded colorants. As predicted, it turned green but much prettier than expected. Slight pitting possibly from poor mixing. Will attempt color variants to get back to the original silvery slate blue.
